Papa And Mama’s House

Papa’s Barn

Our House in 1937 At the right corner of the house above the lattice, a portion of the water cistern is visible. Water was pumped from the well into the cistern and gravity fed all the fixtures in the house. Eleanor, age 5, is by the door.

By 1940, Daddy had added columns to the front and enclosed the back porch for the living room.

After the birth of Eleanor and Kurt Jr, the house needed another bedroom. This room housed the children until Eleanor was old enough to need her own room, when Mother and Daddy moved in with the boys, It was built perpendicular to the main house and had to be rearranged when plans were made to build a second floor. This photo, from the mid-fifties, was taken shortly after moving it in line with the main house. Daddy cut it loose from the house, jacked it up and put large pipe rollers under it to rotate it to this location before reattaching it. Quite a project for the family to undertake!
